A content analysis of election propaganda for the Belgian elections of May 23, 1965 was carried out in which the symbolic themes or motives adopted by the 3 major parties, ie, the Soc-Christian, the Belgian Socialist, & the Party for Liberty & Progress, were studied. The outstanding characteristics of the campaign propaganda were: showmanship, limelighting of personalities, development of a public relations & a `barnumesque' style. Themes are analyzed & the role of the party leaders in the campaign is discussed. It is stated that the elections were emotional & the last stage of the campaign was accordingly nervous. The election situation was complicated & marked by the `negative diversity' which is the dominant sign of modern society. 4 pages depicting party propaganda are presented. Modified IPSA.
